The 2013 Reedy River Duck Derby held on May 4, 2013 was one of the most successful Duck Derbies to date.
The proceeds will benefit the Mauldin Miracle League (MML), Greenville Area Interfaith Hospitality Network (GAIHN), EarlyAct FirstKnight, Polio Plus, Partners in Agriculture, and other local charitable organizations.
Although the day was overcast with intermittent rain, it was a fun-filled day with a variety of children's participation activities and displays by local artists. At 2:30 PM, thousands of little yellow rubber duckies were put into the fast flowing Reedy River while a large number of onlookers watched and cheered the ducks as they raced over the falls to the finish line. Earlier in the day 1,000 Yucky Duckies raced down the river. This race was sponsored by the Greenville County Soil and Water Conversation District and was used to promote clean water.
The Reedy River Duck Derby is made possible each year by the generosity of many local sponsors who provide cash, prizes and services donations.
The Grand Prize sponsored by Publix was a year's supply of groceries. Second Prize, was a weekend stay at the Courtyard by Marriott. Many more fabulous prizes were awarded to the first ducks to cross the finish line. The Grand Prize winner was Tom Poore.
The Rotary Club of Greenville Evening, a service organization of local business men and women, holds the Reedy River Duck Derby annually as its primary community service project. This is the ninth consecutive year that the group has organized this charitable fundraiser. Rotarians traditionally develop community service projects to address many of today's most critical issues, especially children at risk, poverty and hunger, the environment, illiteracy and violence. Rotary Club members worldwide work to achieve the key Rotary objective of "Service above Self."
The Rotary Club of Greenville Evening is proud to announce it will move forward with another spectacular race on May 3rd, 2013 with the goal of racing 10,000 adopted ducks over the falls benefiting local charities including Greenville Area Interfaith Hospitality Network (GAIHN), Mauldin Miracle League (MML), and EarlyAct FirstKnight. We will also support Rotary International Charities including Polio Plus and World Hunger. We intend this race to be our biggest and best yet.
